Why isn’t there a “pay per channel” tv option?

I am sure that I know the reason there isn’t a “pay per channel” option with most cable and dish companies.  But since cable and dish companies are notorious for having bad customer service, don’t they think that allowing a customer to pay for only the channels that he wants to watch would be a good thing?

Let’s think about this.  How many times do you think you would change from cable to dish if you were able to pay for only the channels you wanted?  You most likely wouldn’t change at all unless the competitor offered some out of this world deal, right?  Exactly.  The customer would be happy and the cable company would be making MORE money and retaining their customers longer.  Isn’t that the key in the cable business?

Cable companies would have better overall prices because this would allow for better price competition.  Every month I get another letter or post card in the mail regarding some kind of deal with the cable company.  The deal is only for one year and they never tell you that you will be getting crappy customer service either.

I guess I will put this on the list with “unlimited cell phone use” for a fixed monthly fee.
