It has just come to my attention, after about 42 minutes (thank you DVR) of Dateline NBC, that Apple iPods are quite the hot commodity! Ok, I always knew they were since the first one was sold. I haven’t owned one to this day and after watching Chris Hansen nail some iPod thefts on camera, I will be sure to never steal one either.
On the show, Dateline is working in partnership with unloseit.com in hopes of being about to create software so that people can track their iPods if they have in fact been stolen. What a nice show for Dateline to do and it is set up just like the famous (and my all time fav) “To Catch a Predator”. I am sure they will be showing re-runs throughout the month or maybe you can catch it on YouTube.com. Either way it is quite educational and if you think you know what Apple’s comment to this whole story was, think again!

1It sounds stupid but one way to make sure your iPod does not get nicked off you is to have non-white/apple headphones. The Apple ones are a dead giveaway to would-be thieves.

2yes that is a common thing since iPods came out and that advice was going around fast. Thanks for the comment.

3Actually the only actual tracking software that you install on your device mentioned was GadgetTrak (www.gadgettrak.com). The Dateline software was actually developed by Blackfin Technologies and it was just a CD-ROM disguised as an itunes/activation disc.

5dateline worked with both blackfin tech and unlose.it (disclaimer: i founded unlose.it and was interviewed on dateline)
indeed, blackfin’s software was installed on the PC via cd-rom and does not actually track the device, it tracks the person to whom it was “registered.”
however, unlose.it’s iGuard software, when installed on your iPod and other USB devices, can track the location of the missing device, instantly notify you, display a warning message on the remote computer and even delete files from the device. pretty cool, ‘eh?
dateline did not mention iGuard on the show because it was not ready for market when they interviewed me earlier this year.

6Thanks for the additional video. I think it’s a good thing you created and it can certainly make a difference. So far the iGuard software sounds pretty cool.
I will have to look into getting myself a copy when the time comes. Thanks again for your comment!
