Why are CDs at least 74 minutes in length?

Do you know why a CD holds AT LEAST 74 minutes of music?  I never knew why and always thought it was a strange number to pick.  guess I just figured that’s what it can hold and that’s it.

If you know why or think you know why, comment here, I am interested in your answers.

Try this article about CD Length.

I’ve heard the answer to this, but I can’t cite a source because it was quite a while back when I heard it (I think it could have been on John Tesh’s radio show.) The reason given is that because that was the length of the inventor’s favorite orchestral piece, which he used to create the prototype. So, in other words, a completely arbitrary decision. :D

That is pretty close. The CEO of Sony wanted to be able to put Beethoven’s 19th on ONE cd. That is the reason they hold AT least 74 minutes of music. Good work!

That is very interesting. Apparently, I’m just not curious enough. I never thought of wondering why a CD is that length..lol. I need to develop more curiosity.
