Video game systems has a lot to do with this, in my opinion. Teens and young adults have been playing handheld gaming systems for years, what’s a better way to appeal to that group of people than with cell phones that are tiny and packed with email, internet access, games and cameras? The cell phone companies aren’t idoits, they knew that if they gave teens and young adults the opportunity to get a cell phone with options, internet, cameras and games, they would take it.
Sucking you into a 2-3 year plan is easy when the phones are only 1 cent with plan. Then, once you are in the plan, the phone software “is old and should be upgraded to match our new system” there you are left to buy a new phone. Now, you have to buy a new phone at full price or sign another extension to get the phone at 1 cent. Which would you choose? Well, I just need a portable phone for emergencies and traveling, that’s it. Pretty simple to go with the Tracfone, without a doubt!

1I can’t agree with you more. Even the cheapest phones available come with all sorts of useless features. When I buy a phone, it has to do two things: make phone calls and send text messages. If I want to go online I’ll just use my computer instead of a tiny display. If I want to take pictures I’ll use a digital camera with a decent lens instead of a crappy phonecam with a pinhole lens. If I wanna play games I’ll use my Nintendo DS.

2[…] it’s a huge plus if the gadget makes their life easier to boot. I am not a 100% gadget guy, cellphones are way too busy these days, but I do like to get the occasional gadget to tinker […]
